Jae Spinaze is a sculptural basketry and weaving artist. Her passion is weaving and sculpting with foraged plants and discarded elements; natural or human-made. She loves to learn a technique then tweak and transplant it to unexpected materials or forms to create beauty from what others may see as rubbish. Jae has a neurological disability which meant she had to give up work as a doctor, but the inspiration and problem-solving in creating a piece settles and focuses her mind. Jae is constantly learning, challenging herself and adapting. Often the materials themselves lead her to unanticipated outcomes with her pieces. As the recent winner of the Chalkos Award in the 2026 Brisbane Sculpture Festival, Jae was recognised for the originality, multi-layers of artistic processes and the integration of different materials in her work.
