July 2018 Forum

To Represent the Past, the Present, and the Future

Rhyl Hinwood

Tuesday 3 July 2018

A 1986 Churchill Fellow, Rhyl was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2006 for her service to the Visual Arts following her award of an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Queensland in 2001 for her outstanding contribution to the University and to the Visual Arts in Queensland.

Her career has been based around the original design and production of commissioned sculpture, usually of considerable significance and proportion.

Rhyl's presentation will touch on the representation of abstract qualities often required by commissioning bodies and her measured responses.

It will include the design and execution of carvings in the University of Queensland Great Court, an historic frieze eleven meters long for Monte Sant'Angelo Mercy College in North Sydney and statuary for the west end of St John’s Anglican Cathedral in Brisbane.
